Spaying and Neutering for Pets

When your pet is spayed or neutered, it eliminates the possibility of them having too many puppies or kittens. Your pet’s risk of developing diseases in their reproductive system is also reduced. Cats should be spayed/neutered when they are 4 to 5-months-old. Dogs should be altered depending on their size, breed and gender. When should I get my pet spayed/neutered?

Spaying or neutering your pet can be done at approximately 6 months of age. Your pet is given an exam prior to surgery to determine whether they’re healthy enough to undergo the procedure. This includes a pre-anesthetic blood screen, which lets us know the level of anesthesia appropriate for your pet. If necessary, we will also do the required vaccinations during their surgery.

Is it a good idea to let my pet have at least one litter?

There are usually no advantages to letting your pet have even just one litter. However, there are plenty of advantages to having your pet spayed or neutered. In female pets, the procedure decreases their chances of developing breast tumours, cystic ovaries and uterine infections later in life. Neutering your male pet significantly reduces their risk of prostate cancer later in life as well as their desire to roam the neighbourhood searching for mates. They are also less likely to spray or mark areas, which is a territorial trait.
